Detailed Insight into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0

The consumption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel has been increasing, and it is essential to know the actual definition of the same. The chemical science is similar to that of fossil jet fuel, but the production of SAF is from replenish-able raw material that is also sustainable. Compared to the amount of carbon-di-oxide that gets emitted from that of fossil fuel, results show that SAF emits much lesser during the fuel’s course of life. Examples of renewable feedstock – used cooking oil, home, and business’s solid waste matter like textiles, paper, food scraps, and packaging material. Other mentionable sources that are also a possibility for renewable raw materials are wastes from forestry such as wood, algae, rapid growing trees, and crops.

Importance of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The energy that gets suppressed in the jet fuel packs against their weights is high, and this high-density energy aids in enabling commercial flights. In the present, to transport a certain number of people in a swift, being reliant on fuel like SAF is but natural. Usage of Sustainable Aviation fuel renders a precise amount of reduction in the emission of CO2, an 80% reduction when compared to that of fossil fuel jet. This again depends on the kind of renewable raw material used and the way SAF manufacturing happens. SAF can be used by aircraft that have certification to use the present detailing of jet fuel.

Safety and Cost Involved in Using SAF

Combining Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Fossil jet fuel until about 50% is possible, and all tests checking the quality on par with ordinary jet fuel. Once the combining is complete, SAF will carry the same characteristics similar to that of fossil jet fuel. The result is renamed and certification is done again as Jet A or Jet A-1. The infrastructure for fuel does not change as the handling of SAF is still the same as ordinary jet fuel.

At present, the cost of SAF is higher than that of Fossil jet fuel. That comes down to the blending of the present stock of sustainable raw materials and the consistent growth of newer manufacturing technologies. When there is an advancement in technology, efficiency becomes higher, in turn, making the cost of fuel more cost-efficient. Emission control and reduction are valued and recognized in an enhanced manner by passengers, thus increasing the absorption of SAF in the aviation industry.
